What is the PNT?

The Pacific Northwest Trail, also known as the PNT, is a trail that traverses the stunning Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Starting at Chief Mountain Border Crossing in Glacier National Park and ending at Cape Alava, the westernmost point in the contiguous USA, this trail spans a total of 1246.2 miles and crosses through 3 national parks, 7 national forests, and 6 wilderness areas. Along the way, hikers will be treated to breathtaking views and diverse landscapes, with the high point of the trail reaching 7569 feet and a total gain of 214,041 feet and loss of 219,329 feet. The Pacific Northwest Trail intersects with 3 major trails, the Pacific Crest Trail, the Idaho Centennial Trail, and the Continental Divide Trail. Recognized as one of the 11 national scenic trails in the United States, the Pacific Northwest Trail earned federal designation in 2009. The trail presents several challenges, including bushwhacking through dense forests, mixed class 2 and 3 scrambling in rocky areas, and coastal travel that requires hiking around 20 headlands at low tide. With roughly 400 miles of the trail passing through grizzly habitat, the Pacific Northwest Trail offers a chance for wildlife encounters with one of North America's largest and most iconic predators. The westbound experience of the trail, as described by its creator Ron Strickland, is "traveling like a raindrop that has fallen on the continental divide, one flows west towards the Pacific Ocean."
